Saturday, March 14, 2009 — Sam Ragan Poetry Festival
Southern Pines, NC — Weymouth Center, 555 East Connecticut Ave.

Event Description:   A FREE, open-to-the-public, day-long celebration of poetry and music:
—   In addition to readings by Cathy Smith-Bowers, the featured poet, the day will include readings of the poems of Sam Ragan, recitations of poetry from memory ("Poems by Heart from the Heart"), open mic readings, and music presented by Chambergrass, the wonderful collaboration of vocalist/classically trained bass violinist David Schwartz and accomplished vocalist/bluegrass banjoist Kim Koskela.
—   Come early for complimentary morning refreshments and to order an optional box lunch if you like. Registration begins at 9:15am. Wear a straw hat and bow tie to honor the memory of Sam Ragan, or come just as you are. Bring your friends. Make new friends. Enjoy the day!

09:15   Registration and Annual Dues Payment
Keep your society membership current by paying your annual dues. Order a box lunch ($10, cash or check payable to "I95") until 10:15 am. Enjoy coffee, tea, and snacks. If you’re a member and didn’t pick up your 2009 Pinesong (edited by Debra Kaufman) in May, claim it in the book room.

10:00   Business Meeting and NCWN Greetings
Tony Abbott, president, presides. Ed Southern, director of the North Carolina Writers’ Network, delivers a brief message.

10:15   Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition
Honorable mention Marjorie Hudson reads. This NCWN competition was judged by poet Sarah Lindsay.

10:30   Brockman-Campbell Book Award
Winner, Dannye Romine Powell (A Necklace of Bees), reads, followed by honorable mentions Irene Blair Honeycutt (Before the Light Changes) and Joe Mills (Angels, Thieves, and Winemakers). This award was judged by poet David Romtvedt.

11:30   Open Mic and Recitation

12:00   Lunch (book room open)

01:00   Cutting Edge of Poetry
Poet and professor Alan Michael Parker talks about what's going on in contemporary poetry that we should know about.
