Student Poem of the Month — April 2009

Your hands are tough, torn, and broken
That giant tear is just a token
The pain of swinging for giants and flips
The endless nuisance of getting rips
You suck in chalk every breath you take
Hold on tight, don't make a mistake
Scared to death of smacking your feet
"Come on, girls, you have a meet"
But those aches and pains will help you get by
So get ready, get set, and fly

Wait for the judges to raise their hand
Sweat on your palms while you anxiously stand
The wind in your face
You run the race
Hurtle, block, land, you fall
Before this meet you thought you had it all
You look at your ankle swollen and sore
Ice at home to see if it tore
It is the best you can do so don't sit and cry
Just get up, get ready, and try

You salute and there isn't a sound
You cross your legs and turn around
The music begins and your teammates cheer
Jump, turn, knee up, and veer
Get ready to tumble, point your toes
Round off back handspring layout pose
Switch leap, tuck, get ready again
Front handspring front tuck, this is insane
Dance, on your knees, kick, and stop
Prance, ½ turn, now fluff it up
The ending pass you are tired and sore
The routine is done you can do no more
